Bees advance in the EFL Cup after beating Reading 2-1

A dramatically changed lineup for the Bees saw a number of players get rested in this busy week. Goals by Callum Wilson and Fabio Carvalho propelled the Bees to a 2-1 victory.

What was different

Carvalho starts

Another important milestone on his road to recovery, Carvalho started his first game for the Bees since October 2025. After nearly 11 months away, he made a strong contribution to the game, scoring a goal and providing a second assist on Wilson's goal.

Throughout his career, Carvalho has shone in the EFL League Cup. Throughout his time at Liverpool, Fulham and Brentford, he has scored 5 goals and 3 assists in 11 games, for an average of 0.93 official goal contributions per 90 minutes.

Rico, the centre-back

With the team dealing with injuries to Nathan Collins and Sepp van den Berg, Keith Andrews named Rico Henry to start the game at left centre-back. This was Henry's 238th game for Brentford and 292nd overall in senior football, but we can't find any evidence of him starting a game at centre-back in any of those previous games.

While he didn't have the size of his defensive partner, Kristoffer Ajer, he did use his speed well to break up a few plays and prevent goal-scoring opportunities. After the game, Keith Andrews alluded to some players playing out of position, saying:

"We had a couple of square pegs in round holes."

Fortunately, Rico's square peg seemed to fit well enough into the round hole of left-sided centre back, at least for one game.

Captain Kristoffer

With Nathan Collins out due to injury, and Vitaly Janelt on the bench, Ajer was named captain of the Bees for the first time. In fact, it was the first time as captain in any of his 292 starts across Brentford, Celtic, Kilmarnock and Start (in Norway). It was also the third straight game with a different captain for the Bees (Collins, Janelt, Ajer).

Balcombe starts

Throughout a lengthy Brentford career that started at the age of 8, goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe made only his second start in a competitive game for the Bees. His performance was solid with a couple of strong reaction saves and good distribution throughout. Nice to see him getting some first-team game time.

First start for Diouf

Newcomer, Malick Diouf, made his first start for the Bees since joining from West Ham.

What was familiar

Two starts, two goals for Wilson

Wilson has made two starts for the Bees, both in the EFL League Cup. He has scored in each start, first up in the 6th minute vs Birmingham City, and in the 3rd minute vs Reading. Maybe he should be starting more often.

Triple substitution

Not long ago, we noticed that Keith Andrews made a triple substitution, something he didn't do all last season. Well, a few games later, it seems to have become somewhat of a regular occurrence. He switched things up against Reading by bringing on Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Aaron Hickey in the 77th minute. Here are the other times he's made a triple substitution.

Efficient team goals

The goals that the Bees scored were an impressive pair of team goals, where the team quickly went from one end to the other very quickly.

First up was Wilson's goal in the third minute.

Near the start of injury time, right after Reading nearly scored, the Bees went coast-to-coast and went up 2-0.

Both plays quickly progressed the ball from Balcombe through Michael Kayode to Mikkel Damsgaard. As often happens, Damsgaard almost immediately sent the ball forward, first time to Carvalho, second time to Dango Ouattara.
