Brighton beats the Bees 2-1
A cold, wet and windy afternoon at the Amex ended 2–1 to Brighton, but it very nearly finished 2-2, as Igor Thiago missed a chance to score his second goal of the game in injury time. Instead, Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen saved the penalty and kept all 3 points for Brighton.
What was the same?
Thiago keeps scoring
Brentford's Thiago scored again, netting his 9th Premier League goal of the season, with a cool 29th‑minute penalty that put the Bees ahead 1-0. His clever back-heel pass sent Dango Ouattara into the box where he was tackled to earn the penalty. It was the third time this season that Ouattara has been fouled in the box.
van den Berg in the lineup
Defender Sepp van den Berg made his 50th appearance for the Bees. He's reached the milestone quickly as he just joined the team in August 2024. Since joining, he's played in every game that he was available for, missing only 5 due to injury. He's managed to unseat Ben Mee and Ethan Pinnock, previous stalwarts in Brentford's back line. He and current partner Nathan Collins have played every minute together in the league this season.
One area that he'll surely want to change soon is the fact that he's yet to score for Brentford. This season, he's had a few great chances and has one of the highest expected goal ratings in the league without scoring (1.5). He's got the second shortest average shot distance as well. The fine margins will surely break his way soon.
